Mahira Khan fronts Pakistani push at TIFF 2026, highlighting media diplomacy
Mahira Khan led Pakistan’s delegation at TIFF 2026, participating in premieres, panels and networking while showcasing cultural craft and advancing media diplomacy.

Pakistan used one of the world’s largest film platforms this week to amplify its cultural diplomacy, with actress-producer Mahira Khan among the country’s most visible delegates at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2026.
The 51st TIFF, running September 10–20, screened 293 titles across venues including Roy Thomson Hall, Princess of Wales Theatre and TIFF Lightbox, and gathered filmmakers and industry professionals from more than 80 countries.
Mahira Khan took part in red-carpet events, industry panels and networking sessions designed to foster co-productions and distribution links. She attended the world premiere of Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, directed by Bassam Tariq, and moderated conversations under TIFF’s Community Impact programming. Alongside Tariq, she is set to receive the Muslim Excellence in Cinema and Arts Award for contributions to cinema and elevating underrepresented stories.
On a panel about women in South Asian cinema, Khan highlighted changing roles in front of and behind the camera in Pakistan’s film and digital sectors and framed festival exposure as a bridge to international audiences. As she put it, “Pakistani stories deserve a global audience.”
Cultural heritage and industry strategy
Khan’s choice of a wine chiffon saree by Pakistani label Aafrinish by Niazi — reportedly handworked over 1,440 hours by two artisans with Kashidakari, Cutdana, silver Zari and lotus motifs — drew attention not only for fashion but as an assertion of soft power and traditional craft on a global stage.
Observers and analysts at TIFF said the presence of Pakistani artists can open doors for future collaborations, distribution deals and media cooperation, including potential co-productions and digital-content exchange with countries such as Canada. For Pakistan, which has seen renewed activity in its film industry, participation at TIFF 2026 is being presented as a targeted effort to use cinema for people-to-people contact and cultural understanding.
