China and Pakistan deepen research ties to bolster climate-resilient agriculture
China and Pakistan have expanded an academic partnership on climate-resilient agriculture, advancing joint projects, publications and proposals that target soil health, waste management and emerging pollutants.

Researchers from China and Pakistan are strengthening collaboration to tackle shared threats to agricultural productivity, including soil degradation, pollution and the growing pressures of climate change. The partnership aims to translate laboratory advances into field-tested solutions that can improve soil health, manage waste safely and protect food security in both countries.
Muhammad Zia-ur-Rehman, a professor at the Institute of Soil and Environmental Sciences at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, recently visited the Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture (IEDA) at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Beijing as a foreign expert. His visit built on a scientific partnership with Professor Li Hongna and her team that began in 2019 and has involved academic exchanges, joint research and coordinated applications for funding.
Progress on projects and joint outputs
Several collaborative initiatives are advancing: a China-submitted project involving the two researchers was shortlisted for further review, enabling Zia-ur-Rehman to take part in an in-person proposal defense, while joint proposals submitted in Pakistan are under review by the Pakistan Science Foundation and the Punjab Agriculture Research Board. The partnership has already produced at least one joint publication and a shared research agenda focused on the safe management of municipal waste and crop residues in agricultural soils.
Beyond traditional concerns, the teams are exploring emerging threats to agricultural ecosystems such as microplastics and antibiotic resistance, assessing their environmental behavior and possible remediation strategies. Zia-ur-Rehman emphasised how combining China’s technological capacity with Pakistan’s varied agro-ecological conditions offers a practical route for testing and scaling solutions under real field conditions.
“Closer cooperation can accelerate practical solutions to shared problems,” Zia-ur-Rehman said, summing up the partnership’s pragmatic aims.
Looking ahead, both sides plan to expand exchanges of graduate students and young researchers, increase joint supervision and co-authored publications, and pursue mutual funding mechanisms that enable larger, longer-term projects. Officials and researchers have also discussed the eventual creation of a joint laboratory or research platform dedicated to soil health and sustainable waste management.
The move from individual exchanges toward sustained institutional collaboration reflects a broader push to build capacity and deliver field-ready technologies that address food security and environmental risk amid changing climate conditions.
