Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to dine with President Trump amid AI safety debate

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei will have a private dinner with President Trump at the White House tonight, a first meeting that highlights deep divisions over AI safety and recent tensions with the Pentagon.

A planned one-on-one dinner between Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and President Donald Trump underscores growing political attention on the future and governance of advanced AI systems.

Axios first reported the meeting, and TechCrunch confirmed the plan with a source familiar with Amodei’s schedule. The dinner is set to take place at the White House tonight and will mark the first private meeting between the two figures.

Amodei has been prominent in public debates over AI risk and has recently advocated for slowing or exercising greater caution around development. Trump, by contrast, has dismissed concerns about an AI backlash as partisan and has pushed to rebrand the technology as “super intelligence.”

Why the meeting matters

The encounter comes amid a fraught relationship between Anthropic and parts of the U.S. government. Earlier this year the Pentagon labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk after the company moved to impose guardrails on how its technology is used; Anthropic has challenged that designation in court. At the same time, some other administration officials have maintained friendlier ties with the company.

The dinner follows a weekend in which Amodei was also the subject of a sketch on Saturday Night Live, reflecting how AI company leaders have become public figures as policy and safety discussions intensify.
